The Washington chapter of the Farmer Veteran Coalition created the Shepherd Project, funded through Boeing's “Our Heroes” initiative, to actively engage and guide veterans seeking to transition into agriculture through direct mentoring, coaching, and connecting with resources and training. We aim to work closely with these beginning farmer veterans to help them navigate through the complexities of starting an agricultural enterprise. In working with our partners throughout Washington state, we can help beginning farmers access the education, opportunities, and resources they need to make their agricultural dreams come true.
The Shepherd Project recognizes the unique challenges that veterans face when transitioning back into civilian life. Many veterans struggle with finding meaningful employment, and the agricultural sector presents an exciting opportunity for veterans to apply their unique skills and experience in a fulfilling and rewarding way. We believe that veterans possess the discipline, resilience, and commitment necessary to succeed as farmers, and our program is designed to support them in achieving their goals.
Our program is built on the principles of mentorship and community. We believe that by connecting veterans with experienced farmers and industry professionals, we can provide them with the guidance and support they need to navigate the challenges of starting a farm. Through one-on-one coaching and mentoring, we can help veterans develop the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed as farmers, while also providing them with a sense of community and belonging in the agricultural sector.
Ultimately, our goal is to help veterans build successful agricultural enterprises that contribute to the growth and vitality of their local communities. By providing veterans with the support they need to pursue their dreams, we can help them build fulfilling and sustainable careers in agriculture, while also strengthening our local food systems and promoting economic growth. We believe that the Shepherd Project has the potential to make a real difference in the lives of veterans and their communities, and we are proud to be part of this important initiative.
